Addressing Physiological Barriers to Micronutrient Absorption from Fortified Foods

March 26, 2026

The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community of a funding opportunity under the Global Grand Challenges initiative titled “Addressing Physiological Barriers to Micronutrient Absorption from Fortified Foods.” This call seeks to support the development of innovative solutions that improve the absorption and effectiveness of micronutrients from fortified foods, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where deficiencies remain high despite fortification efforts. Proposals should address biological and physiological barriers (such as inflammation, infections, gut health, and dietary inhibitors) that limit nutrient uptake, and generate practical, scalable interventions that enhance nutrition outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Scope of Innovations

Applications may include (but are not limited to):

  • Formulation innovations to improve nutrient bioavailability
  • Interventions targeting gut health, inflammation, or microbiome function
  • Approaches addressing dietary inhibitors of absorption (e.g., phytates)
  • Novel delivery systems or bio-enhanced fortification strategies
  • Integrated solutions combining nutrition, health, and biological interventions

Projects must demonstrate:

  • A clear mechanistic understanding of absorption barriers
  • Potential for scalability and real-world application
  • Relevance to LMIC settings and vulnerable populations

Funding Tracks and Awards

The call offers tiered funding options based on project maturity:

  • Option A: Up to USD 300,000 (up to 24 months) – early-stage, proof-of-concept
  • Option B: Up to USD 500,000 (up to 24 months) – validation and optimisation
  • Option C: Up to USD 1,000,000 (up to 36 months) – advanced development toward implementation

Eligibility

The call is open to:

  • Researchers from academic and research institutions
  • Organisations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors
  • Applicants globally, including those based in LMICs (including Ghana)

Application Deadline: 28 April 2026 (11:30 AM Pacific Time)
