Profile

Professor Nancy Odurowah Quashie (aka Duah) is a Professor of Molecular Epidemiology and former Head of the Department of Epidemiology, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana. Her expertise is in Parasitology, Immunology and Molecular Epidemiology of infectious and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). She is a Commonwealth Scholar and a Fellow of the Fundacion Mujeres Por Africa Science by Women.

With a PhD in Infectious and Tropical Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Prof. Quashie has been working on infectious diseases and predominantly on malaria (epidemiology, parasite genetic diversity and the determinants of antimalarial drug resistance) for the past 27 years. She played a pivotal role in the acquisition of the scientific evidence-based data used as the basis for the change of the malaria treatment policy in 2005 from the use of chloroquine to artemisinin-based combination therapy for uncomplicated malaria in Ghana. In addition, her current research interest is in NCDs and focused on human genetics and familial hypercholesterolemia.

As a scientist, she works in collaboration with researchers from both local and international institutions including US Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU), Malaria Branch, Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, Centers for Global Health of the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC, USA), Medical Research Council Unit-The Gambia-LSHTM, Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Spain), Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (Spain), University of Barcelona (Spain), University of Montreal (Canada), Weissman Institute of Science (Israel), McGill University (Canada), Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Brazil), University of Texas at El Paso (USA), University of Glasgow (UK) and University of Sheffield Medical School (UK). A publication from the collaboration with the scientists from the Malaria Branch, CDC got a nomination for the prestigious Charles Shephard award for Laboratory Science in 2017. Her research has been supported by funding agencies including WHO-TDR, USAID, AFHSC-GEIS, IDRC, Global Fund, IAEA, MRC, ERC, EDCTP, UGRF, World Bank, ISCIII, Fundacion Mujeres por Africa-Science by Women, Merk Global Health Institute and WUN in various capacities (Principal investigator, Co-investigator or Collaborator). She has published several articles and been a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she has served as reviewer for funding agencies including the NORMA Grant Review Committee for Novo Nordisk Fonden (Denmark), La Caixa Foundation (Spain), Volkswagen Foundation (Germany) and Wellcome Trust (UK) for the Mobility – Global Medicine and Health Research call.

Prof. Quashie is also a faculty member of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), one of the founding members of the Pan African Vivax and Ovale Network (PAVON) and a member of the Malaria Intervention and Resistance Network (MIRN) of the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP). Her professional membership in associations/ societies includes the ASTMH, ESCMID, ASM, WWARN, GSA etc. She has served on several boards and committees of the University of Ghana and other institutions.
