Director (Research & Innovation)
Professor David Dodoo-Arhin is a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering. He holds a PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy (2010), an MSc in Development Finance from the University of Ghana Business School (2023), a certificate in Science & Technology Parks and Areas of Innovation from the Korea Innovation Foundation (Daedeok Innopolis, South Korea), a BSc in Physics (2004), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Science Education (2010), and a Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ in Science Education (1999) from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
Prof. Dodoo-Arhin joined the University of Ghana as a lecturer in 2011, became a Senior Lecturer in 2014, an Associate Professor in 2018, and a full Professor in 2021. He served as Head of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (2014–2016), Acting Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (August–December 2016), and substantive Director from 2022 to 2024.
His research interests include hybrid and nanostructured materials for packaging, energy, and environmental applications; process and quality control systems; conversion of plastic waste to energy products (waste valorization); industry-academia partnerships; science, technology, and innovation ecosystems; mentorship; and STEM education for females. Prof. Dodoo-Arhin has been instrumental in fostering partnerships between academia, industry, and government to drive sustainable energy transitions and address climate change.
Prof. Dodoo-Arhin is a visiting Professor at the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment of the University of Johannesburg (South Africa), a fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Programme, the Inter-Academy Partnership for Science Advice for Policy, and a member of the Ghana Young Academy. He has undertaken various postdoctoral research fellowships and visits at the University of Pretoria, University of Cambridge Graphene Centre, University of Strathclyde, Université de Poitiers, Ecole des Mines d’Albi-Carmaux (France), and the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) (Germany), among others.
He has participated in research projects funded by international organizations, including CCNY, UKRI, SIG-RISE, MCF, BMBF, WUN, CNRS, the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and INGSA, either as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I).
Prof. Dodoo-Arhin serves on numerous local and international committees, including the advisory board of the Scientific African Journal, the executive board of the African Materials Research Society, and the steering committees of the ARUA-GUILD cluster of excellence in Renewable Energy and the African Academy of Sciences’ AESA-RISE postdoctoral fellowship programme. He is the Local Organising Committee Chair for the first in Africa 2025 International Union of Materials Research Societies’ International Conference on Advanced Materials to be held in Ghana.
He has published extensively in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, book chapters, and patent, and has participated in several local and international conferences. In July 2021, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences honoured him with a Meritorious Service Award for distinguished leadership.
