John Allwright Fellowship

The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University Community about the John Allwright Fellowship (JAF), a competitive, merit‑based program offered to scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries who are currently or have recently been involved in ACIAR-funded research projects. The primary aim of the Fellowship is to strengthen scientific research capability and institutional links in ACIAR partner countries to undertake high-quality and impactful research.

 The fellowship provides an opportunity to pursue formal postgraduate qualifications at an Australian tertiary institution, with the overarching aim of strengthening scientific research capacity and deepening institutional partnerships across ACIAR partner countries.

 Programme Focus

For the 2026 intake, JAF is specifically allocating spaces for research addressing:

  • Climate change
  • Climate adaptation
  • Strengthening resilience to climate-related impacts

 Applicants are strongly encouraged to consider how climate factors will influence their proposed research and action plans.

 Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be scientists or economists from ACIAR partner countries
  • Be currently or recently involved (within the last 24 months) in an ACIAR research project or small research activity
  • Intend to undertake postgraduate studies at an Australian higher education institution
  • Demonstrate strong research potential and alignment with climate-related priorities for 2026

 Fellowship Benefits

The JAF covers the minimum duration required to complete the approved academic program and generally includes:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Return airfare (economy class, most direct route)
  • Establishment allowance (support for accommodation, books, and study materials)
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE)—fortnightly stipend
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP) prior to coursework
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award
  • Pre-course English (PCE) training, if required
  • Supplementary academic support, where necessary
  • Fieldwork support—one return airfare for eligible research students
