Deadline
31 October 2025
The Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship (1 January to 31 December 2026) to pursue innovative research in civic science. This fellowship is funded by the Rita Allen Foundation.
Civic science is an emerging field committed to co-creating a future where all people can shape and benefit from science, technology, and innovation. It recognises that urgent challenges ranging from health disparities and climate change to artificial intelligence and biotechnology - require new ways of connecting science with society. At its core, civic science is about integrating community voices and values into scientific practice to achieve mutual benefit for science and society.
The elected fellow will undertake a year-long programme of work designed to establish civic science in South Africa, informed by evidence of best practices in the field, and to create a vibrant network of researchers and science communication practitioners interested in contributing to civic science in the region. The programme of work includes:
1. Mapping the science engagement landscape in South Africa to identify opportunities and partners for advancing and multiplying civic science in the region.
2. Case studies of three locally relevant civic science initiatives to help inform further development of the field in the local context.
3. Development and delivery of a module on civic science as an online short course.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must have completed a PhD in science communication, sociology, science & technology studies (STS), public policy, or a related field within the past five years.
Strong research skills and evidence of scholarly outputs (publications, presentations).
Demonstrated interest in public engagement, civic science, or science-society relations.
The successful candidate must be based in Stellenbosch, South Africa, for the duration of the fellowship.
