UNIVERSITY OF GHANA RESEARCH FUND
The University of Ghana Research Fund (UGRF) was established to support research activity and capacity building programmes for faculty and staff. The Fund is administered by the Research and Innovation Directorate and grants are awarded to applicants who meet the criteria for respective Calls.
Categories of Grants
Early Career grants are for exploratory research and would ordinarily not exceed GHC10,000.00. Grants are awarded for a duration of one year and targeted at early career faculty in preparation for funding applications to external donors.
Mid-Career grants are awarded for multi-disciplinary research projects with collaborators from different UG departments. Awards of up to GHC55,000.00 are available for a maximum duration of two years.
Multi-disciplinary grants of up to GHC150,000.00 are intended for inter-faculty research projects which specifically address a national development issue with the potential to shape or influence national policy. Grants are awarded for up to 2 years to multi-disciplinary research teams.
Eligibility
All grant applicants must be full-time faculty of the University of Ghana. Faculty members applying for awards in the multi-disciplinary research categories should have completed one year of full-time service at the University to qualify for a grant. Collaborators from other institutions are required to provide a letter of support from respective institutions.
Non-Eligibility
Previous recipients of UGRF grants;
- With ongoing UGRF funded research.
- Yet to submit final technical and financial reports.
- Yet to publish research findings in peer reviewed journals.

Conditions for Applying
- Applications must be submitted online (no hard copies accepted)
- Disclosure of other active grants received in relation to the research topic.
- Faculty on post-retirement contracts cannot be principal investigators of UGRF funded projects but may serve as mentors.
- All applications must be endorsed by an applicant’s Head of Department.
Application Review/Selection Criteria
Proposals that meet all requirements are coded and independently reviewed by a panel set up by the Research and Innovation Directorate; awards are based on the following criteria;
- Relevance of Research
- Scientific Merit of Methods, Design and Analytical Framework
- Potential to Impact Policy
- Justification for Resources
- Capability of Research Team
Awards under UGRF are subject to approval by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Innovation and Development.
