Nurturing Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Student Venture Support Programme (SVSP) is a flagship initiative of the Research and Innovation Directorate (RID), University of Ghana, designed to nurture student innovation and entrepreneurship by equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, mentorship and resources needed to transform innovative ideas into viable and impactful ventures.
The programme provides a platform for students to identify societal challenges, develop innovative solutions and explore opportunities to commercialise their ideas. Through structured training, mentorship, enterprise development and pitching opportunities, SVSP seeks to bridge the gap between academic ideas and practical enterprise, while fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the University and beyond.
Programme Objectives
The SVSP seeks to:
- Build the entrepreneurial and business development capacities of students.
- Encourage students to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
- Support the transformation of promising ideas into viable and sustainable ventures.
- Provide students with access to mentorship, enterprise training and business development support.
- Promote collaboration among students, universities, industry and other innovation ecosystem partners.
- Create pathways for student-led ventures to access funding, incubation and market opportunities.
- Contribute to graduate employability, job creation and sustainable economic development.
Programme Approach
The programme combines entrepreneurship training, mentorship, innovation development and venture pitching to provide participating students with practical experience in building businesses.
Participants are exposed to masterclasses and practical sessions covering areas such as business model development, innovation, branding, intellectual property, investment readiness, marketing and pitching. They also receive guidance from experienced entrepreneurs, academics, industry practitioners and other experts.
A key component of the programme is the Student Enterprise Pitch Competition, which gives participating teams the opportunity to present their business ideas and innovations to a panel of judges. The competition encourages participants to demonstrate the relevance, feasibility, commercial potential and social or environmental impact of their solutions.
Partnerships
The SVSP is implemented by the University of Ghana through the Research and Innovation Directorate in collaboration with strategic partners within the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem. The programme has benefited from partnerships with Imperial College London, Impact Hub Accra and the British Council, among others.
The programme has also expanded beyond the University of Ghana, bringing together student innovators from partner institutions including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), and University for Development Studies (UDS).
Impact and Achievements
Since its inception, the SVSP has grown into an important platform for developing Ghana's next generation of entrepreneurs. The programme has trained more than 300 students and supported over 85 student-led ventures, providing participants with opportunities to develop their ideas, build entrepreneurial capabilities and pursue commercial pathways.
The programme's impact is reflected in the growth of ventures emerging from its various cohorts. Several participating teams have gone on to establish businesses, secure funding, participate in national innovation competitions and develop solutions addressing challenges in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, food production, environmental sustainability and technology.
The programme continues to strengthen the University's innovation ecosystem by creating opportunities for students to move beyond developing ideas in the classroom to building solutions with real-world impact.
Looking Ahead
The University of Ghana, through the Research and Innovation Directorate, remains committed to strengthening the SVSP and expanding opportunities for student innovators. Through sustained partnerships, mentorship, enterprise support and access to funding and markets, the programme aims to develop a stronger pipeline of student-led ventures capable of contributing to job creation, economic development and the solution of societal challenges.
The SVSP forms part of the University's broader commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and impactful research, while providing students with a transformative experience that prepares them to become not only job seekers, but also job creators.
