The Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) is an annual event celebrated across the African continent on June 30. It was established by the African Union (then the Organization of African Unity – OAU) in 1987 to commemorate Africa’s scientific and technological heritage, and to inspire renewed commitment to research, innovation, and the application of science for the continent’s sustainable development.

The celebration serves as a platform to recognize the contributions of African scientists, researchers, and inventors whose work continues to shape Africa’s progress in health, agriculture, energy, environment, and technology. It also aims to stimulate interest in science among young people, encouraging new generations to pursue careers in research and innovation.

At its core, the DSRA promotes the idea that science and technology are key drivers of Africa’s transformation, and that investment in knowledge systems, higher education, and research institutions is critical to solving local and global challenges.

Observance at the University of Ghana

The University of Ghana (UG) actively participates in the commemoration of DSRA as part of its commitment to advancing research and innovation in Africa. Since 2022, UG has institutionalized the observance of DSRA through a series of events and activities held throughout the month of June. These include:

  • Public lectures and keynote addresses on emerging scientific and developmental issues;
  • Panel discussions featuring researchers, policy experts, and community stakeholders;
  • Exhibitions and demonstrations of innovative research, technologies, and products developed by UG faculty and students; and
  • Outreach activities aimed at promoting science education and environmental awareness.

Through these engagements, the University provides a platform for dialogue between academia, policymakers, and the public on how science can be harnessed to address national and continental challenges. The celebrations also highlight the breadth of research undertaken at UG, reinforcing the University’s role as a hub of scientific excellence and a leader in shaping Africa’s research agenda.

The DSRA remains an important reminder of Africa’s capacity for innovation and the need for sustained collaboration to drive scientific advancement across the continent.
