Nexa, a climate and health initiative
The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community of a funding opportunity under Nexa, a climate and health initiative co-led by Grand Challenges Canada and the Science for Africa Foundation. This funding opportunity supports bold, locally driven innovations that enable local health actors to turn climate-driven health risk signals into timely health service delivery action, with the aim of reducing health harms linked to changing mosquito ecology, extreme heat, and poor air quality.
Funding Streams
The call supports two categories of innovation:
- Proof of Concept: early-stage ideas, methods, or products to be tested in real-world settings;
- Transition to Scale: innovations that have already been tested, shown feasibility and effectiveness, and are ready for wider implementation.
Funding Amount and Duration
- Proof of Concept: up to USD 200,000 per innovation for 18 to 24 months
- Transition to Scale: approximately USD 250,000 to USD 2,000,000 per innovation for up to 24 months Eligibility
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include legally incorporated or equivalent organizations such as:
- research and academic institutions;
- non-profit and for-profit organizations;
- social enterprises;
- non-governmental organizations; and
- governmental organizations.
The applicant organization must:
- be legally incorporated or equivalent;
- be active and in good standing with the relevant registration authority;
- be the intended funding recipient;
- be capable of entering into a funding agreement with one or more Nexa partners; and
- have the capacity and required approvals to receive and administer funding.
Funding Focus
Applications must directly address at least one of the following areas:
- Climate-informed early warning and monitoring systems, including innovations that integrate weather, climate, and health data to support timely surveillance and health service delivery action; and/or
- Climate-responsive patient care delivery, including innovations that improve triage, diagnosis, treatment, and continuity of care in the context of mosquito-borne infections, heat, and poor air quality.
Application Deadline
Applications must be submitted through Grand Challenges Canada’s Fluxx portal by 22 July 2026 at 2:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. UTC).
Information Session
An information session will be held on Monday, 6 July 2026 at 9:00 a.m. ET (2:00 p.m. UTC), followed by an open Q&A for potential applicants.
