The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community of a funding opportunity under the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer (JWO) Research Grant 2026. This prestigious grant aims to support an outstanding early-career African scientist to undertake a high-impact research project or programme over a period of up to three years. The grant seeks to advance innovative, scientifically rigorous research that addresses critical African challenges, with strong potential for long-term impact.

Grant Value

• Up to USD 150,000 for successful applicant
• Project duration: up to 3 years

 Research Focus
Proposals must demonstrate a strong link to:

• Biodiversity
• Conservation

Eligibility
The lead applicant should:

• Hold a PhD
• Be an early-career researcher/scientist with not more than seven (7) years post-PhD work/research experience (excluding career breaks for family responsibilities);
• Have strong links to a credible African institution; and
• Be proposing research focused on or in Africa.
