The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community that the O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chair for Food Science and Technology, funded by the National Research Foundation of South Africa, and hosted in the Department of Food Process Engineering, announces the availability of funding to support the research component of a PhD programme
Research activities will be conducted under the following themes:
- Waste Valorisation
- Modernization of Traditional Food Processes
- Food Safety and Quality Management
- Food Packaging
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who meet all the criteria below are invited to apply:
- PhD student already enrolled at the University of Ghana.
- Completed and passed all coursework requirements for PhD Year I.
- Completed and passed comprehensive exams for PhD Year 2 (by the date of award).
- Excellent academic credentials.
- Demonstrable capacity to carry out original and innovative research.
- Able to work independently, highly motivated.
- Good communication skills.

Supporting Documents
- A motivation statement (1 page max)
- PhD research proposal (Max 3 pages, Times New Roman 12, 1.5-line spacing) clearly outlining the background, objectives, scope, and methodology for applicant’s research (include a budget and work-plan on separate pages). The proposal MUST be based on one of the research areas listed on the application form.
- CV (max 2 pages)
- PhD Year 1 Transcript
NOTE
Shortlisted applicants would be contacted for an interview in January, 2026 after which successful applicants will be notified. The scholarship will be valid for the 2025-26 academic year.
