On Monday, 17 November 2025, the University of Ghana officially kicked off its first-ever Employee Week, a celebration designed to uplift, honor, and unite the University’s workforce under the banner: “One UG, One Workforce: Celebrating Excellence.”
The celebration began at 9:00 a.m. with a campus-wide float, starting from the University stadium and moving through the night market and Academic Freedom Road before concluding at the Great Hall. Staff from all Colleges and Directorates participated in colour-coded, College-branded T-shirts, highlighting the sense of community across the University. A brass band supported the procession, adding rhythm and energy as enthusiasts staff made their way along the route.
At the Great Hall, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar of the University, delivered the welcome address. She reflected on the importance of pausing to acknowledge the dedicated employees whose efforts keep the University functioning effectively. She introduced the chair for the ceremony, Professor Felix Ankomah Asante, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development (RID). Drawing from the University’s strategic emphasis on its commitment to faculty and staff, Prof. Asante acknowledged that the University thrives when employees thrive. He underscored the unity among staff although they serve in diverse capacities, as they are united in purpose, effort and commitment.
He noted that Employee Week marks “the beginning of a new tradition—one that recognises and celebrates our people and the work that often goes unseen but is essential to the progress of the University.”
Prof. Asante reaffirmed that every member of staff contributes to the advancement of the institution, adding that UG’s recent accomplishments—including consolidating its position as the best university in Ghana and among the best in Africa—are made possible through the dedication of its workforce. He encouraged staff to reflect on both individual and collective achievements, and to continue strengthening the bonds of unity and collaboration. He conveyed the Vice-Chancellor’s best wishes, noting her participation virtually.
Prof. Asante expressed appreciation to the Planning Committee, chaired by Mrs. Regina Adomaa Darko, Assistant Registrar at the Compensation Unit, and acknowledged the support of Professor Joseph Yaro, Provost of the College of Humanities.
The launch also included remarks from the Director of HRODD, messages from the Colleges, and artistic contributions—a poetic performance and a musical rendition led by Dr Kofi Anthonio, Lecturer at the Department of Dance Studies, School of Performing Arts. The ceremony was moderated by Ms Victoria Anim (Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs Directorate) and Ms Mavis Osafo Adu (School Administrator, School of Pharmacy). Representatives from UTAG, GAUA, FUSSAG, TEWU, and Public University Junior Staff Association were in attendance.
Summary of Employee Week Activities
The activities scheduled for the week include virtual sessions on mental health and nutrition, College- and Central Administration-based engagements, a university-wide retirement planning seminar focused on ageing and pension schemes, and an inter-college sports competition. The celebration will conclude with a closing ceremony to be led by the Vice-Chancellor.
With the launch of Employee Week, the University of Ghana reinforces its dedication to supporting and celebrating its workforce. Prof. Asante encouraged staff to embrace the week as both a moment of appreciation and an opportunity for reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to the University’s mission.
