The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community of the Global Food System Challenge 2025, which supports innovations that transform food systems to deliver safe, nutritious, and sustainably produced food accessible to all. This Challenge seeks bold, evidence-based, and scalable solutions that advance food security and resilience, especially in the Global South, by addressing one or more of the following focus areas:
- Safe and nutritious food for all
- Sustainable and regenerative food production practices
- Equitable access to food and resources
Selected projects will receive not only funding but also visibility and access to a global network of partners supporting innovation for sustainable development.
Award Categories
- Seed Grants: Up to US $25,000 each for early-stage ideas or prototypes (up to 8 awards)
- Growth Grants: Up to US $100,000 each for innovations with proven feasibility and high impact potential (up to 3 awards)
- Grand Prizes: Up to US $250,000 each for transformative and scalable innovations (up to 2 awards)
- Total funding pool: Approximately US $1 million for 2025
Eligibility
- Open to academic and research institutions, non-profits, social enterprises, and early-stage for-profit organisations
- Organisations are encouraged to form teams (researchers or students) to compete
- Applications must be submitted by an organisation (individual applicants are not eligible)
- Innovations must demonstrate potential for positive, measurable impact on nutrition, sustainability, and equity
- Projects with negative trade-offs or limited scalability will not be considered
