A Competition of Ideas Presented at the Student Venture Support Programme (SVSP) Pre-Demo Day

July 29, 2025

The Research and Innovation Directorate has successfully rolled out three phases of the Student Venture Support Programme in collaboration with KNUST and UCC. The programme aims to promote innovation and equip students with enterprise skills. The fourth phase of the programme  commenced with the inclusion of students from the University of Development studies (UDS) joining in the competition of ideas.

On July 25, 2025, eleven teams of student entrepreneurs from the University of Ghana’s Student Venture Support Programme (SVSP) (Cohort 4) convened at the Research & Innovation Directorate (RID)  for the Pre-Demo Day showcase. The event provided a platform for young innovators to present solutions addressing diverse challenges, from food waste to mental health advocacy.

A Gathering of Minds

Mr. Kwame Ofei, Research Development Officer at RID, who was the MC, for the occasion welcomed  guests and participating teams,  on behalf of the Director  (RID). In his opening remarks, Professor David Dodoo-Arhin,  emphasized the significance of SVSP in fostering an entrepreneurial culture. He noted that the judges’ role was not only evaluative but also to support and assure participants of UG’s commitment to nurturing innovative ideas.

To foster a relaxed and engaging atmosphere, the event begun with a musical icebreaker activity involving judges, students, and guests, which set the tone for competitors to be at ease.  Each team was to present a viable business idea, in a five-minute pitch to qualify for the final competition. .

Mr. Ofei provided context for the day’s event, noting the significant expansion of the SVSP Cohort 4  to include  the University for Development Studies (UDS) as a new partner institution. Commencing on June 13, 2025,   the fourth phase of the programme received a total of 236 applications,  with 42 teams shortlisted  from across  partner universities. This Pre-Demo Day featured top teams from the University of Ghana (UG). The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and University of Cape Coast (UCC), also hosted their Pre-Demo day at their respective campuses.

The judging panel reflected a multidisciplinary approach, with expertise spanning digital development (Prof. Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, Associate Professor of Information Technology and Education, Department of Distance Education, University of Ghana), commercial strategy (Pearlyn Budu), food science (Dr. Maame Yaakwaah Blay Adjei, Lecturer at Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Ghana), entrepreneurship (Prof. George Acheampong, enterprise lecturer and researcher, University of Ghana Business School), and the creative arts (Mr. Patrick Dodoo).

Eastern Freshaura showcased their edible fruit preservation coating, providing mango samples and addressing food safety certification queries.

Fitroot Ghana engaged the audience with sugar-free ice cream samples while emphasizing nutritional benefits. Health Tech for Africa presented an AI diagnostic tool aimed at improving healthcare access in rural areas. Road to Sanity advocated for youth mental health through planned community initiatives involving art exhibitions and merchandise.
