RID Hosts UG Idea Challenge: A Contest of Creative Thinking

July 23, 2026

The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) has organised another edition of the UG Idea Challenge, an initiative designed to uncover entrepreneurial talent and strengthen design thinking skills among University of Ghana students. The competition forms part of a series of innovation-focused activities led by the Directorate's Innovation Unit and builds on the success of the Student Venture Support Programme (SVSP), which has supported multiple cohorts of student innovators in transforming promising ideas into viable ventures.

Organised in partnership with the University of Ghana Careers and Counselling Directorate and the Nectar Network, the UG Idea Challenge provides students with a practical platform to develop entrepreneurial competencies while pitching innovative business concepts before a panel of judges.

Participants were selected through a competitive application process, with successful applicants demonstrating enthusiasm for entrepreneurship, creativity, and problem-solving. The programme brought together students from different academic backgrounds, encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

The competition was preceded by an interactive masterclass on design thinking, which equipped participants with practical tools for identifying real-world problems, generating innovative solutions, and developing user-centred business ideas. The session introduced participants to the principles of ideation, teamwork, and innovation that underpin successful entrepreneurship.

Participants also received practical training on bee management and the commercial opportunities within the apiculture value chain. The session highlighted how beekeeping can generate sustainable livelihoods through honey production and other bee-related products while requiring relatively modest start-up resources. The training challenged participants to view agriculture and environmental sustainability as viable areas for innovation and enterprise.

Following the training sessions, participants were randomly assigned to teams and tasked with developing an innovative business concept centred on bee management. Each team was required to demonstrate the viability of its idea, develop a basic business model, and present a compelling pitch before a panel of judges.

Beyond competing for prizes, the challenge offered participants an opportunity to strengthen essential entrepreneurial skills, including teamwork, critical thinking, business planning, and public speaking. It also served as a platform for networking with professionals and receiving constructive feedback that could help refine their ideas for future development.

The judging panel, comprising representatives from academia and the innovation ecosystem, evaluated the presentations based on criteria including creativity and originality, feasibility of the business concept, market potential, clarity of the presentation, teamwork, and the practicality of the proposed implementation.

The UG Idea Challenge reflects the Research and Innovation Directorate's commitment to nurturing an entrepreneurial culture within the University of Ghana by providing students with opportunities to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions with commercial and social impact. Through initiatives such as the Idea Challenge and the Student Venture Support Programme, the Directorate continues to empower students to become innovators, job creators, and contributors to national development.
