TWAS Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI)
The Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) is pleased to inform the University community of the TWAS Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI), a funding opportunity aimed at supporting early-career African researchers as they establish independent research programmes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This initiative is offered by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and focuses on enabling recently appointed African faculty members to build strong research foundations, purchase critical equipment, and initiate pilot studies that can lead to long-term research projects and international collaborations.
Funding & Duration
- Grant amount: Up to USD 15,000 (seed funding)
- Duration: 1 year
Funded activities may include equipment purchases, consumables, small-scale field or lab work, workshops, data analysis, and capacity building activities directly related to the proposed project.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be newly appointed Principal Investigators (usually within the first 3–5 years of their first independent academic/research position).
- Not be more than 40 years old.
- Be national of an African country and based at an African university or research institution.
- Have a clear research plan demonstrating potential for long-term impact and future grant competitiveness.
