Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance & Economics
The Bank of Ghana Chair in Finance & Economics is a prestigious professorial-level position jointly hosted by the University of Ghana Business School and the Department of Economics. It was established in August 2022 following a landmark three-year, GH₵3 million partnership agreement between the Bank of Ghana and the University of Ghana. The core aim of the Chair is to strengthen evidence-based policymaking through high-quality, policy-relevant research in areas such as monetary policy, banking regulation, fiscal dynamics, and financial intermediation
The occupant is charged with:
- Collaboratively conducting research commissioned by the Bank of Ghana.
- Cultivating grant applications and fostering academia‑industry linkages.
- Publishing in high-impact journals and promoting knowledge dissemination via public lectures, policy briefs, seminars, and executive training.
- Supervising graduate students and developing local case studies.
- Organizing public lectures and roundtable forums.
- Strengthening ties among UGBS, the Economics department, the Bank, and Ghana’s wider financial sector.
The Chair’s term lasts a minimum of two years and a maximum of three, with a full support package, including furnished office, administrative and research assistance.
Role & Engagement
- Research and teaching across graduate programmes.
- Supervises doctoral candidates while organizing public lectures and seminars.
- Will lead outreach initiatives, including executive training and scholarly roundtables.
Chair’s Governance & Partnership Structure
- Governance: The Chair reports jointly to the Dean of UGBS and the Head of the Department of Economics.
- Collaboration: Regular interactions with the Bank’s governors and senior management ensure alignment of research outputs with policy needs.
- Support Framework: Full logistical and administrative support—including office space, vehicle, and secretarial services—has been provided to ensure the Chair's effectiveness.
- Appointment & Official Introductions: Prof. Imhotep Y. P. Alagidede was officially installed as the inaugural Chair on 29 January 2025 at a ceremony attended by key dignitaries, including Dr. Ernest Addison (Governor), Dr. Maxwell Opoku-Afari (First Deputy Governor), and Elsie Addo Awadzi (Second Deputy Governor).
