RESEARCH AND INNOVATION DIRECTORATE BUILDS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GHANA ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION

January 30, 2025

The University of Ghana's strategic plan (2024-2029) focuses on achieving global impact through innovative research, teaching, and learning, using a technology-driven and people-centered approach. This vision is anchored on five strategic pillars, a key part of this being to build and strengthen partnerships. In line with this goal the Research and Innovation Directorate (RID) organized a grantsmanship workshop for researchers and staff of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC).  The Capacity Development Unit at RID facilitated the workshop at the National Nuclear Research Institute training facility on the GAEC main campus.

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) is responsible for advancing the peaceful use of nuclear, biotechnology, and related technologies for the socio-economic development of Ghana. This is achieved through research, training, and commercialization. In seeking to further enhance prospects for commercialization the Commission engaged with the Research and Innovation Directorate for training and knowledge sharing. Their aim is to build the capacity of the Commission’s researchers to develop successful grant applications.

The workshop was attended by approximately 50 participants, representing three of the six GAEC institutions: the Ghana Space Science & Technology Institute (GSSTI), the National Nuclear Research Institute (NNRI), and the Radiation Protection Institute (RPI). They included research scientists, technologists, and administrative staff.

Topics treated included Identifying Grant Opportunities and Understanding Funders’ Requirements, How to Plan and Organize a Funding Proposal Writing: Key Elements to Consider and Writing a good Impact Statement & Case for Support, Understanding the Review Process, Proposal Submission Processes, Ethics and Integrity in Research, Budgeting and Financial Management of Grants, Award Negotiations and Acceptance, Intellectual Property and Technology Commercialization, Partnerships and Innovation Management, and Monitoring Research Performance and Publication.

At the end of the training session, the Acting Director General of GAEC expressed his sincere gratitude to the University of Ghana for the valuable insights shared during the workshop. He was confident that the knowledge acquired by participants would be effectively utilized to secure funding for research.
